Aqueous Extract of Terminalia chebula Induces Apoptosis in Lung Cancer Cells Via a Mechanism Involving Mitochondria-mediated Pathways BABT
Wang,Meiling; Yang,Limin; Ji,Musi; Zhao,Pengwei; Sun,Peng; Bai,Ruixia; Tian,Yunpeng; Su,Liping; Li,Cunbao.
The current study was designed to evaluate the aqueous extract of Terminalia chebula activity, and the main pathway was detected on lung cancer by extracts of T. chebula. Aqueous extract of T. chebula was separated using a zeolite, and five fractions of T. chebula extract were obtained and analyzed by ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Antiproliferative activity was evaluated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) methods against human lung cancer (A549) and mouse lung cancer cell line LLC. T. chebula acts by regulating the Bcl-2 family protein-mediated mitochondrial pathway detected by western blot. Fraction 4 of the T. chebula extract showed much function and was thus studied further. Fraction 4 increased the...

Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) for MUN analysis in normal and adulterated Milk Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,M.C.P.P.; Silva,N.M.A.; Bastos,L.P.F.; Fonseca,L.M.; Cerqueira,M.M.O.P.; Leite,M.O.; Conrrado,R.S..
The objective of this study was to evaluate the CombiScope FTIR equipment based on Fourier Transform Infrared methodology (FTIR), to assess the content of milk urea nitrogen (MUN) in Brazil. Repeatability and reproducibility of CombiScopeTM FTIR (Delta Instruments), and comparison with an enzymatic automated method (Chemspec® 150; Bentley Instruments) were tested to measure raw milk urea nitrogen (MUN). Additionally, MUN levels stability after storage of raw milk samples at 4ºC, and 20ºC for up to 15 days, and capability and precision to detect extraneous urea added as an adulterant to the milk were evaluated by FTIR equipment. There was a high correlation coefficient for the analysis of MUN by FTIR equipment, when compared with the automated enzymatic...

Humic Substances and Chemical Properties of an Acrisol Amended with Vermicomposted Vegetal and Animal Residues Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Antunes,Rul Martins; Leal,Otávio dos Anjos; Castilhos,Rosa Maria Vargas; Castilhos,Danilo Dufech; Andreazza,Robson; Schwalbert,Raí Augusto.
ABSTRACT Vermicomposted vegetal and animal residues are rich in nutrients and humic substances and thus can be applied to the soil as a source of functionalized organic matter (OM) and as an alternative to chemical fertilizers. In Southern Brazil, many animal and vegetal residues are easily accessible. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate alterations in soil chemical properties and OM chemical composition in response to the application of local vermicomposted residues. The vermicomposts of: cattle manure (CM), sheep manure (SM), rice parboiling sludge (PS), CM+PS; SM+PS; CM+food waste (FW); SM+FW; CM+fruit waste (FRW); and SM+FRW were mixed with Acrisol (Argissolo) samples collected at 0.00-0.20 m layer, and the samples were incubated in plastic bags...

In situ distribution and characterization of the organic content of the oyster shell Crassostrea gigas (Mollusca, Bivalvia) ArchiMer
Dauphin, Yannicke; Ball, Alexander D.; Castillo-michel, Hiram; Chevallard, Corinne; Cuif, Jean-pierre; Farre, Bastien; Pouvreau, Stephane; Salome, Murielle.
Cultivation of commercial oysters is now facing the possible influence of global change in sea water composition, commonly referred to as "ocean acidification". In order to test the potential consequence of the predicted environmental changes, a cultivation experiment was carried out. The left and right valves of the oyster shell Crassostrea gigas differ in their structure; moreover, lenses of non compact layers are irregular. The shell layers of juvenile C. gigas are studied using a variety of highly spatially resolved techniques to establish their composition and structure. Our results confirm the presence of three different calcitic structural types. The role of the lenses of chalky layers is not yet deciplered. Despite a common mineralogy, the...

Marine pollution: Let us not forget beach sand ArchiMer
Galgani, Francois; Ellerbrake, Katrin; Fries, Elke; Goreux, Chantal.
Background: Assessing the chemical or bacterial contamination in marine waters and sediments is a very common approach to evaluate marine pollution and associated risks. However, toxicity and organic pollution of beach sands have not yet been considered, except in adjacent waters. In the present study, the toxicity and the chemical contamination of natural beach sands collected 20 m from the shoreline at two sites located on the Mediterranean Sea (Marseille and La Marana, Corsica) were studied. Results: Up to 16.93% (net percentage) abnormal or dead larvae was observed in elutriates prepared from the urban beach sand sample (Marseille); no significant toxicity was observed in the sample collected from the reference beach in La Marana. Results of Fourier...

Milk coagulation properties and methods of detection Ciência Rural
Beux,Simone; Pereira,Edimir Andrade; Cassandro,Martino; Nogueira,Alessandro; Waszczynskyj,Nina.
ABSTRACT: One of the most crucial steps in cheesemaking is the coagulation process, and knowledge of the parameters involved in the clotting process plays an important technological role in the dairy industry. Milk of different ruminant species vary in terms of their coagulation capacities because they are influenced by the milk composition and mainly by the milk protein genetic variants. The milk coagulation capacity can be measured by means of mechanical and/or optical devices, such as Lactodynamographic Analysis and Near-Infrared and Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) by Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli grown on cane molasses fortified with ethanol BABT
Gomaa,Eman Zakaria.
The aim of this work was to study the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) by Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli isolated from the industrial contaminated soil samples using cane molasses as an inexpensive substrate. The amount of PHA accumulated followed a similar pattern to its growth for each of treatment indicating a growth-related production, yielding maximum PHA production of 54.1 and 47.16% for B. subtilis and E. coli, respectively after 96 h cultivation in the medium containing 6 and 8 % molasses, respectively and decreased thereafter. The growth and PHA yields were improved by introducing 1% ethanol into the molasses medium. Ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate at a concentration of 1 g/L served as the best nitrogen sources for...

This study evaluated the effects of total and dissolved organic matter produced from two swine wastewater treatment systems, a biodigester and a manure lagoon, on the adsorption, desorption, and leaching of alachlor (2-chloro-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-N-(methoxymethyl)acetamide) in soil. It was used the batch equilibrium method to test adsorption and desorption, and the results are presented in Freundlich isotherms. It also used disturbed soil columns to evaluate the miscible displacement of alachlor in soil treated with total and dissolved organic matter. This assay was used to monitor the concentration of alachlor in the leached material, the amount of total organic carbon, and the pH. The addition of swine wastewater promoted greater adsorption and...
